How to Change a YouTube Shorts Thumbnail

Shorts handle covers differently from regular videos. Here's how to set yours — and what to do when the option is missing.

YouTube Shorts handle thumbnails differently from regular videos, and the rules have shifted over time — which is why so many creators can't find the option. This guide explains what's actually possible today, on both mobile and desktop, and what to do when the feature isn't available to you.

What "thumbnail" means for a Short

A Short's thumbnail is the cover frame shown on your channel's Shorts shelf, in search, and on your channel page — it is not shown while the Short plays in the vertical feed. By default, YouTube grabs a frame from your video. You can change which frame, and in many cases upload a custom image.

Method 1: pick a frame or upload (mobile, at upload time)

The most reliable moment to set a Shorts cover is while you're uploading:

  1. Record or select your Short and tap Next until you reach the details screen.
  2. Tap the small thumbnail / cover preview near the top.
  3. Drag along the timeline to select the frame you want as the cover.
  4. If your account and region support it, tap Upload (or the gallery icon) to choose a custom image instead.
  5. Confirm, finish the details, and post.

Method 2: change it after posting (desktop, YouTube Studio)

  1. Open YouTube Studio in a desktop browser.
  2. Go to Content and find your Short.
  3. Open its Details.
  4. Under the thumbnail area, choose a different auto-generated frame, or upload a custom thumbnail where the option is offered.
  5. Click Save.
Don't see an upload option? Custom Shorts thumbnails have rolled out gradually and aren't available to every account or region yet. If you only see frame selection, that's the current limit for your channel — pick the strongest frame, and design your Short so a good cover frame exists in the first place.

Design a cover frame that earns the tap

Because many creators are stuck choosing a frame rather than uploading art, the smart move is to plan a clean cover moment into the Short: a clear face, a readable on-screen word, strong contrast, and no motion blur.
